As our family has gotten older and my kids have grown up, we have stopped exchanging birthday presents with our sisters, brothers and in-laws except when we find ourselves invited at the last minute to one of their family birthday parties. It’s not that we don’t still love them; it’s just that as our family has grown, it gets to be too many birthdays! Also, we don’t get together for every birthday like we used to when all our kids were little.
Last weekend, we were invited to a last minute birthday party for my sister-in-law. I was kind of stumped as to what to bring her. Then Heather (my daughter and my The Beadin’ Path partner) suggested I “make her some earrings." As you know if you’ve read my other blogs, I collect beads but don’t often make something with them. I’m fully capable of making earrings. After all, it’s so easy my 4 year old grandson can do it; although he is especially talented in all areas! (Handsome too but that’s another story!)
So, I opened my bead stash closet here at home (which is actually an old wardrobe from an historic hotel once located in Portland, Maine) and with one hour to go until we had to leave for the party, I started to make some earrings. I found some great vintage foil beads and brass headpins and made a simple pair of earrings. I didn’t add much as the focus beads were so beautiful I wanted them to really stand out. In a flash, they were done. I looked at them and thought, ‘not bad!’ It didn’t take much talent as the beads made it easy. Now I was inspired! I poked around my beads and found some discontinued Swarovski beads that I love. They are called Cosmo Jet and are clear with jet black checkerboard lines. I put them on Bali silver headpins again, added a freshwater pearl on top and Voila! Now, I was really in the mood. I still had about 45 minutes left before we had to leave so I brought out some Pumpkin Hill handmade beads that I had stashed away and just love! I hesitated. How much would she love them? Was she worthy? Heck yes! I pulled out some jet Swarovski beads and cranberry freshwater pearls, a Bali silver clasp and whipped up a necklace. It practically made itself once I picked the beads. I left the end un-crimped and included a few extra beads in case she wanted it longer or wanted to re-design it. The beads were so beautiful that I wanted her to love them. And even if she wanted to rearrange them, I didn’t care. She seemed to like the necklace and it fit perfectly!
It was tough seeing those beads go! Will she love them like I did? Does she know how special they are? Maybe, maybe not. But they have started their journey and will now travel through time being loved and admired over and over again.
