I’m like a magpie. I walked by some crystal strands on Deb, our mail order manager’s desk yesterday and the sparkle drew me in. I hadn’t seen some of the colors and shapes so I scarfed up some ruby teardrop beads that I hadn’t seen before. What a beautiful color the ruby is! From there, I had to explore the back stock room to see if we had any other shapes in ruby. Daphne, our processor, was there and she started showing me some of the new Swarovski beads. Wow! I found some big pendants in the ruby color then had to have them in a couple other colors as well. I had worn a beautiful vintage long strand necklace that I had found in a Florida antique shop to work that day. It was made of vintage amber color German glass beads. I decided I would pick out crystals to make one like it (without the knotting as I don’t have a lot of patience). I ended up with a sparkly baggie full of crystal. I don’t even know the color names but it was a sage green, opaque pink, opaque white in flower shape, light yellow cubes and of course, the ruby. I think when I put them all together I will have a gorgeous necklace that will go with anything! I want to make it really long so I can wrap it around my neck a couple times if I want to. Now I need time to put it all together before they end up with the rest of my collection in the bead closet at home or the bead chest at work.
The girls that work at the store wear the most gorgeous necklaces! Connie, who is also one of our instructors wears necklaces and earrings that are works of art that belong in a museum! She gave me a wonderful pendant that she had woven for my birthday and it’s in my bead collection. I pull it out once in a while and think I should make it into a finished piece so I can wear it but I feel unworthy of finishing it. Probably some day, after I’m gone, a grand daughter or great grand daughter will look over my stash and find it and squeal with delight. Maybe she’ll even think that I made it. My standing in the family lore as a craftsperson would soar. That’s how it is with family history. Sometimes people don’t get credit for what they have done and sometimes, the wrong people get the credit. I have a china lamp that was hand painted by some sort of great aunt. It was passed down to me through my aunt and then my mother. My aunt is gone and my mother doesn’t know which aunt it was so all I know is some woman in my family was a great artist! I wish I knew her name so I could give her credit but it’s nice just to know that there was talent in my bloodline like that. It leads me to believe that, should I wish and desire, I could do that too. Maybe when I retire.
