The Bead Quiz Answers
Ok! Got your quiz sheet all filled out and printed beside you? Good, because the questions won’t be listed again… just the answers. Get out your red pen and well, hopefully you won’t have to use it too much. Here we go!
1. If you guessed Cyndi Lauper, you’re right! She made that hit song, “Girls just wanna have beads!”
2. If your answer is Austria, you’re right! If your answer is Australia, you’re wrong!
3. The answer we are looking for is wampum, which was considered an official currency.
4. A white stone choker, very stylish. That choker also held her dress up, I believe.
5. This would be a locket. Although lately I’ve seen teeny, tiny frames as pendants, too.
6. The Huichol tribe is located in central Mexico. For more info, go to www.huicholcenter.org
7. The one, the only, Jim Morrison.
8. Round nosed pliers. If you said flat nosed, then shame on you and your oh-so-not-round loops.
9. Gorgeous, fabulous ruby.
10. A white heart. If you find vintage or antique ones, they are GORGEOUS! Especially the red ones.
11. AB stands for Aurora Borealis, which is the rainbow finish on beads and crystals. This was invented by Swarovski and is actually a thin layer of steamed sterling silver. Wish we knew how they did that!
12. Why, 32% lead, of course… the highest lead content of any beads or crystals made today!
13. This is a Dzi bead. (Pronounced ZEE) They were used as ancient talismans for many purposes.
14. Tiger Eye, which comes in a luscious brown, or a divine red.
15. Pearls! Love them!
16. Miyuki Shoji of Japan makes Delica’s and we’re eternally grateful.
17. Ndebele, which is an African tribe known for working with this stitch.
18. Big, beautiful, stunning pearls… ivory in color. Sometimes up to 4 strands at a time. Elegant and beautiful.
19. If you said Fire Opal, you’re right! If you said opal, you’re still right, but not as right as if you’d said Fire Opal.
20. Mother Theresa kept her beads and all her belongings in a tiny draw string pouch.
21. The loom has been used for thousands of years, and will be around for a long time to come.
22. The answer is 11. So that would mean that 6 of size 6.0 seed beads fit into an inch… and 24 of size 24.0 fit into an inch. That’s why the numbers go up, but the beads get smaller. Get it?
23. Turquoise! Prrr! Amazing with coral. Gorgeous with silver. A summertime favorite.
24. Filigree… more popular than ever these days. Versatile, too. Watch for an upcoming article about filigree!
25. Bakelite, so collectible, so rare, so awesome. But dangerous to make. When it went out of production, lucite came roaring in.
26. Jackie Kennedy Onassis. Was there ever a more elegantly adorned woman?
27. Charlottes… one of my very favorite kinds of beads. Size 13.0 is standard, but my motto is buy them all, no matter the size!
28. HA! The answer is red, but I bet you said blue! It really is red. Google it for yourself and see!
29. POP beads! They’re still available today, only in the children’s toy section.
30. This would be the island of Murano. Banished to an island for the best reason ever… beads.
31. The answer is 14 gauge. The same rule that applies to beads in answer 22 also applies to wire.
32. Marie Antoinette, who must have lost her beads when she lost her… Oh, how terrible of me. We actually owe quite a bit to her in the jewelry world. She paved the way for us to wear all kinds of stuff. A real trend setter of sorts.
33. A caliper. The name of this tool always escapes me when I need to borrow one. I end up saying, “Do you have one of those bead measuring thingies?”
34. If you said the evil eye, you’re right. Never play peek-a-boo with the evil eye. You’ll tick it off.
35. True! Swarovski was very inspired by nature. He often named colors after environmental beauty. What a nice guy!
36. Amber is the right answer, but if you said copal then consider yourself right, also.
37. Millefiori… it just rolls off the tongue. What a pretty name for such a pretty style of bead or pendant.
38. This would be a chevron. Some are as big as baseballs! A traditional one is made in red, white and blue.
39. Zoe from Sesame Street always wears beads and barrettes. What a hip puppet!
40. White. Did I catch you here?? High five if you got this one. Noogie if you didn’t.
Congratulations! You’re done. Here’s how to see how well you fared:
A Perfect Score… Brilliant! You have a spectacular bead brain full to the brim of assorted bead goo, with tons of experience in all areas of bead goodness! Bravo, high five and all that.
30 or More Right Well, you are wickid smart! Bet you just got caught up on the picture questions. Not good with visuals, hm? That’s ok. You’re still a big bead smarty-pants. Good for you!
20 to 30 Right Obviously you’re knowledgeable about some things, but stick to the things you like. Branch out! Live a little! Put down those pliers and pick up a needle and thread! Ok, fine. Stick to the pliers, but don’t whine that you only got half the answers right.
10 to 20 Right Are you having a bad day? Wait a minute. Are you a knitter and you’ve snuck in and taken our bead quiz? Well, good for you, but stick to knitting. You semi-stink at beading.
Less than 10 Right I hope none of you got this as a score. The thought of it makes me ill. I need to go lie down.
