Showcasing Vintage Jewelry
During a visit to the Beadin’ Path store, it won’t be long before you notice how gorgeous vintage components, finished jewelry and collectibles have the spotlight in some incredible and interesting frames displayed along the walls and occasionally hanging from the ceiling. Its out way of giving our gorgeous treasure a prominent throne, so to speak, and it makes them noticeable and easy to enjoy at a glance.
On stage, front and center
So many of our bead stash collectible treasures end up in a box, case or drawer where they go unnoticed day after day, and you should know you have more options than that. Let’s get them out where everyone can ogle them! Even if it’s a piece you wish to make into something someday, lets get it out and enjoy it now!
Adorning your home with beads!
Begin by collecting interesting frames. Do you like classic, vintage style beads, components and pendants, or are you more the contemporary type? Accumulate frames that suit your personality and your beads. You can get these frames just about anywhere! At home décor stores, craft outlets, framing stores, yard sales, church fairs, you name it. Don’t worry about what the color is or even if it has glass. We’re going to make it truly yours!
How many? What size?
Don’t be so picky! Opt for a variety of frames in different styles and shapes. They can be metal, wood or any type. They can live anywhere in your home on walls, tables, on ribbon hanging from doorknobs, and other places that you dream up.
Make Them!
If you wish to change the outside look of your frames, then you can use sandpaper to roughen up the surface. This way, the paint will stick. Remove the glass and back parts to the frame first. I recommend spray paint since you get a smooth finish. Spray them outdoors where there’s moving ventilation and let them dry completely. Its fun to include different styles of frames but uniting them with a single color spray, or you can use all the same frame and paint them different colors to add some pizzazz!
Glass Alternatives
Don’t reinsert the glass. Instead, use the glass as a template to cut a piece of foamcore. Foamcore comes in a variety of colors at just about any craft store or art supply store. Its basically a thin sheet of Styrofoam in between two pieces of card stock. Its comes in a large size (I believe 18” X 24”) and can be cut easily to fit. You can cover the foamcore with fabric or nicer rag papers that have texture or embedded seeds, flowers or more. Just wrap it like a present and insert it into the frame.
Hang it up!
Once the foamcore is in, you’re ready to hang. Its as simple as that. You can hang the frame traditionally by putting it on a wall. Or you can run ribbon through the back and hang it from the ribbon to give it a more interesting look. Frames can be displayed on a frame stand or they can stand alone on a table or dresser. How about hanging two frames of the same size back to back and filling in a space out in the open, like a window, doorway or wherever there is space… like in between the top of a banister and the ceiling. You know, places where you can enjoy them but where they won’t interfere with where you walk, sit or stand.
Getting out the goods
Now comes the fun part. All you have to do is get a few pins (jewelers pins or even straight pins will work) and pin your jewelry, pendants or bead up. Use ribbon to string a swag of beads across, or poke a pin through a pendant hole to get it to stay. Do groupings in a circle or a singe piece in the center. Another great idea is to attach pretty doorknobs to the frame so that all you have to do is drape a bracelet or necklace on it. You can use earthquake putty to attach buttons or cabochons onto the fabric, and this putty can be taken off easily without harming anything.
How about earrings
This is a bit trickier, but earrings can be displayed fantastically in frames. Just secure a piece of small, loopy chain from one side of the frame to the other. Let the chain drape right across the front of the frame. Now simply slide your earrings into the loops of the chain where they can hang freely. This is a great alternative to a jewelry tree that takes up bureau space. Simply hang this frame next to your dresser and you’ll have easy visibility to selecting your earrings each day.
Creative and unique
This would be a fun way to give a gift, don’t you think? Display a set of earrings and a bracelet on a picture frame and present it to a friend or loved one. They’ll be delighted and can set it right out where they can enjoy it and wear it with ease.
