Vintage Japanese Glass Pearls

We recently discovered a load of vintage glass pearls made in Japan ca. 1940’s. Many still have original labels on the strands that read ‘Made in Japan’, ‘Hawk Brand’, and ‘Venus Brand’. Our research shows that the first experimentation with a ‘simulated or faux’ pearl was done by a Parisian rosary maker who noticed that certain fish scales would produced a pearl like finish which he called essence d’orient or pearlessence. Faux pearls were made coating the inside of hollow glass beads with various fish scales and then filling them with wax. Later methods of producing simulated pearls in the early 20th century included coating solid glass or acrylic beads with layers of pearlescent coatings. The more coatings, the higher quality the faux pearl. These particular pearls are a lovely luster and coating and high quality, even considering their age. They are also very limited.
